Preparing the shop floor for a coating

Seems everyone is asking me why am I doing this? Why is this necessary? There are several reasons why I want this done.

  1. I’ve adopted a LEAN way of thinking and this will help me LEAN
  2. The shop needs to be brightly lit to build my plane.
  3. The floor should be able to be kept clean and mopped.
  4. To generate and maintain a professional appeal.

I am going to use a epoxy primer coating called Hydro-Seal. This coating is guaranteed to bond itself to the cement producing a seal against moisture. This enables the epoxy top coatings to bond more securely. The issue with putting a coating on cement is the coating releasing. Seems whether it is epoxy or regular paint, it tends to be lifted by use, hot tire pickup, chemicals. Engineers have discovered that ground moisture will be ‘wicked’ from the ground through the cement and react to the undercoating and cause it to turn loose and chip off.

I have SORTED all the items from my main shop area. All equipment, tools and stuff I am keeping has been moved. I wanted to make sure all the floor seals are reachable. My thinking is to have access to these so when I seal the floor I can seal up next to the wall’s seal plate.

This picture shows the back wall of the shop and reveals the air that I piped in years ago. The door to the left goes upstairs to my electronic work shop. The right door leads to the yard equipment storage. All of these areas are junked where Mr. Packrat never troughs anything away. So as my LEANing process is developed I hope to LEAN these areas as well.
